Medicinal sheepskins come from the Australian Merino sheep breed, which is known for the density of its wool and the fineness of its fibers.

Medicinal sheepskins are characterized by the following properties:

  • Temperature regulating
  • Pressure regulating
  • Moisture absorbing
  • Irritation-free
  • Antibacterial
  • Washable

Temperature regulating

Due to the still air between the small curled wool fibers, it is an excellent insulation material. The wool regulates heat by adapting to the body temperature. As a result, it feels pleasantly warm in winter and wonderfully cool in summer.

Pressure regulating

Merino sheepskins are extra thick with wool, providing more support. In addition, the sheepskins are shorn to a length of approximately 3 to 4 cm. This leaves enough air between the wool to regulate the temperature and provides a soft, comfortable firmness that distributes pressure on the body.

Moisture absorbing

Wool can absorb 30 to 40% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp. Up to a moisture content of 15 to 17%, there is no change in the fibers, allowing it to retain its characteristic properties.

Antibacterial

Wool is naturally self-cleaning due to lanolin (wool grease). With heat and moisture, the wool grease partially turns into lanolin soap, which breaks down bacteria. You only need to beat the sheepskin occasionally.

Washable

Because the sheepskin is tanned in a special way, it has its characteristic yellow color. This tanning method also makes the sheepskin washable. If you want to wash the sheepskin, do so on a 30-degree wool wash cycle. After washing, gently but thoroughly wring out the sheepskin. Then let it dry without exposure to a heat source. So, not in the sun, on the heater, or in the dryer.

The wool of a sheepskin stays clean due to the presence of natural wool grease (lanolin). As a result, dirt cannot attach to the wool. So you do not need to wash the sheepskin, but you can, so we recommend that you actually do not do this! By maintaining it in the right way, you ensure that you keep the sheepskin beautiful for a long time:

  • Regular combing helps the sheepskin maintain a beautiful, soft appearance.
  • Dab away small stains with a damp cloth. Try to keep the leather side dry.
  • Occasionally let the sheepskin air out outside or beat it with a rug beater, for example.
  • If necessary, vacuum the sheepskin on low suction in the direction of the hair.
  • Do you have a dyed sheepskin? Avoid letting it lie in direct sunlight. This can cause the sheepskin to discolor.
